Map of the USS Saratoga’s Journey 1843-1844

This map contains two layers. The first thoroughly charts the entire voyage of the U.S.S. Saratoga as described in Journal of An African Cruiser. Each stop has been marked with the date and any relevant details from the journal. Ports have also been linked with color-coded lines, each color representing a single one-way segment of the journey; the color of the lines change where the ship changed directions and headed back along the coast in the opposite direction.

Dark Blue: across from the U.S. and down the coast
Purple: up the coast
Turquoise: down the coast
Green: up the coast
Yellow: down the coast
Orange: up the coast and up to Madeira
Red: down from Madeira and down the coast
Pink: up the coast
White: down the coast and across to Gaboon
Grey: across from Gaboon and up the coast
Black: down the coast
Light blue: up the coast

The second layer notes locations of skirmishes or conflicts between the native African tribes and the colonists and/or military and merchant vessels. Each marker is labeled with the location of the incident and pertinent details.
